How Indoor Fire Pits Can Bring Tranquillity to Your Workspace
Here’s a not-so-little secret for all you super moms out about indoor fire pits. See how they can help you create a hygge atmosphere so you can conquer the chaos of remote work while keeping the household afloat.
Over the past few decades I’ve filled many roles, including a teacher, a track coach, a father of three beautiful daughters. A proud grandpa, yeah. But nothing beats the lucky husband ready to create little slices of peace amidst the chaos of remote work for his wife.
Being a work-from-home mom can be quite hectic. In fact, I was always in awe watching Jen, my wife, tackle her endless to-do lists and deadlines while timing snack time or fielding tantrum fits. Y’all are indeed superhumans!
When you do this almost every day, it’s normal to crave little moments of calm, peace, and quiet. So, when we discovered how hygge with the cozy allure of indoor fire pits could help with this, we didn’t hesitate to hygge up our home (and by extension, her workspace).
Today, I’ll let you in on how you can recreate this thriving atmosphere that enhances your health and well-being as busy work-at-home moms.
So, what exactly is Hygge?
A warm atmosphere, simply.
It’s a Scandinavian concept or idea of slowing down, consciously embracing life’s simple pleasures.
Technically, the word hygge dates back to around 1800, at least in the meaning it has today. However, various definitions of hygge can be traced back to the Middle Ages, where a similar Old Norse word meant “protected from the outside world.”
Hygge is about intentional rest, taking time away from the daily rush to be in the present by yourself or with people. To relax and enjoy quiet pleasures.
Interestingly, when we really think about it, every one of us practises hygge on some level instinctively; those times you curl up with a book or cup of hot cocoa on chilly nights (or a pack of candy with the kids).
Perhaps listening to music by candlelight or slow-dancing with your partner. Whipping up a bowl of popcorn and watching a movie from your seemingly endless to-watch list. Taking a long bath or tackling a jigsaw puzzle in your PJs.
This is what hygge practically means —the precious, simple moments that rejuvenate the body and mind. Imagine how peaceful, healthy, productive and energetic we’d be if we intentionally made this a part of our lives.
My wife, Jen, bless her heart, used to scoff at the idea of slowing down and embracing hygge. She was always in go-go-go mode, trying to check off her never-ending to-do list. But once we discovered the magic of hygge, especially when we upped our home ambience with an indoor fire pit, she realized that slowing down didn’t mean slacking off—it meant prioritizing self-care and finding joy in the little things.
Creating a Hygge Atmosphere with an Indoor Fire Pit
There are a few ways to bring more intentional hygge into your home or workspace. For example, adding natural elements like plants and flowers; a scented oil diffuser; or even adding a small fish aquarium to your home office.
These are all excellent ideas, but what did it best for us was changing the atmosphere of our home with a small indoor fire pit.
Lighting, in general, is practically the number one thing mostly associated with hygge; sunsets, candles, floor lamps, and indoor fire pits are the sweet spots of hygge. The soft lighting casts a warm and inviting glow that permeates the space and infuses a sense of calm and quiet.
Naturally, when we hear fire pits, we immediately picture the classic backyard brick fire pit or other modern outdoor designs for gathering and marshmallow roasts. But indoor fire pits also have their use and are a game-changer for creating a cozy hygge atmosphere right in your own living room.
Jen was initially skeptical about bringing an open flame indoors (I mean, who wouldn’t be?), but guess whose favorite spot now is around the fire pit? Yeah, you guessed right. Once we got our hands on a sleek, modern tabletop fire pit designed for indoor use, she was hooked.
There’s just something about the flickering flames and crackling embers that instantly transform our space into a sanctuary of warmth and tranquillity. Plus, it’s a practical way to add a touch of rustic charm to our otherwise modern décor. Win-win!
Steps to turn your home office into a cozy sanctuary with indoor fire pits
Once we figured out what actually makes a good-quality fire pit and which would be best for us, we got to work and recreated our version of hygge in these simple steps.
Step 1: Choose the right spot
Find a cozy corner in your home office or anywhere around the house you can easily transform with minimal touches. It could be the couch area in your living room. A serene corner in your office, or the basement.
Ideally, it should be a space where you can easily unwind and relax without distractions. Also, you want to consider factors like ventilation and safety when selecting the perfect spot.
Step 2: Make it comfy
Next is to fill the atmosphere by adding touches of hygge-inspired decors to set the mood for a serene sanctuary where you can escape the stresses of the workday. From soft lighting like candles and fairy lights to natural elements like generous greenery decors and flowers. Throw in some extra warm blankets, plush cushions, or your favorite sweater, maybe. Whatever calms you.
Step 3: Glow up the space with the perfect indoor fire pit
As earlier mentioned, lighting is essential to creating a hygge atmosphere. While fairy lights and floor lamps are great, you can take it up a notch by getting an indoor fire pit that suits your space and style.
A few suitable options would be bioethanol tabletop fire pits like this pint-sized powerhouse from Rozato I’m currently obsessed with. Or any modern chimney-free indoor stove. Look for sleek, modern designs that complements your of décor while providing a cozy ambience.
Step 4: Create a daily ritual around the fire pit
The idea of hygge is to intentionally find time to relax, which would be easier if there’s some sort of daily ritual or routine that centres around the fire pit. For example, enjoying a cup of tea by the fire, meditating in the soft glow of the flames, or simply taking a moment to breathe and reflect. Find a routine that brings you joy and peace of mind.
Step 5: Prioritize self-care
Make self-care a priority in your daily routine by carving out time to nurture your mind, body, and soul.
Use your home office sanctuary as a space for mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, or journaling to help you stay grounded and present in the moment.
Remember that taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining balance and happiness in both your work and personal life.
Ready to Hygge up your workspace with an indoor fire pit?
So, there you have it. You want little moments of peace without distraction from your “mini-me’s”? Try hygge with an indoor fire pit.
One of the beautiful things about hygge is its emphasis on connection and togetherness. In our house, the fire pit has become a gathering spot for impromptu family meetings, cozy movie nights, and late-night heart-to-hearts. It’s where we come together as a family to unwind, reconnect, and bask in each other’s presence.
Instead of leaving self-care up to chance, make it a priority and schedule it in. Create an atmosphere you can thrive in as you work at home.
